Michael L. Arvanitis, MD, FACS, FASCRS

Michael L. Arvanitis, MD has been an attending Colon and Rectal surgeon at Monmouth Medical Center since 1988 and has served as Assistant Program Director of Surgery from 1991-1998. He served as Acting Chair of Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center from 2017-2020. He has been the Section Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center since 2003 and was President of the Medical/Dental Staff from 2011-2012. Dr. Arvanitis is the Director of the Patricia Burton High Risk Colorectal Cancer Program at the Cancer Center at Monmouth focusing on the treatment and prevention of colorectal cancer and has been the Chairman of the Familial Colon Cancer Registry Program since 2006. He was named the Director of Digestive Surgery at Monmouth in 2020. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Monmouth’s teaching affiliate, Rutgers’s Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of Medicine. Dr. Arvanitis is both a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Dr. Arvanitis is a member of the New Jersey Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and served as President from 1994-1996. Dr. Arvanitis has been a member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons since 1990, he has served on the New Jersey American College of Surgeons Executive Committee since 2009. He has served as President of the NJ-ACS 2015-2016. Since October 2016 Dr Arvanitis has served as Governor-NJ Representative to the national American College of Surgeons.

On a national level Dr. Arvanitis has been a fellow of The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons since 1992. He has been a member of the ASCRS Public Relations Committee since 2006 and has served as Chairman of that Committee from 2018 to 2021. He has also served on the ASCRS Membership Committee 2006-2009 and is currently serving as a member of the ASCRS Rectal Cancer Committee.

Dr. Arvanitis has been honored as both an educator and practicing surgeon. He has been named one of New Jersey’s “TOP DOCTORS” in the “NEW YORK METRO AREA” in the Castle Connolly Guide and one of “AMERICA’S TOP SURGEONS” in the Consumer’s Research Council of America. He has been named a “TOP DOCTOR” by New Jersey Monthly Magazine yearly for over 20 years.

Dr. Arvanitis has published numerous articles within the field of colon and rectal surgery in peer-reviewed publications including the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum, and Annals of Surgery. In addition, he has presented several lectures and led seminars at both national and international medical conferences. Dr. Arvanitis has particular interest and expertise in laparoscopic surgical treatment of Colon and Rectal Cancer, Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Disease and Diverticulitis.

Dr. Arvanitis received his undergraduate education at Lafayette College and his medical degree at Hahnemann Medical University in Philadelphia. He completed his surgical residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City and completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Steven J. Binenbaum is fellowship trained and board-certified in general surgery with advanced training in laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery with over 15 years of experience. He completed six years of general surgery residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ. During training he participated in multiple clinical research projects which were published in nationally recognized surgical journals. He was awarded Ellen M. Cosgrove, MD house staff research award, a Resident Achievement Award from Society of Laparo-endoscopic Surgeons and Dr. Cyril S. Arvanitis award upon graduation in 2007. He is a graduate of Stony Brook University, NY, with a Bachelor’s “cum laude” degree in Biochemistry and earned his medical degree from St. George’s University in the West Indies.

Following residency, Dr. Binenbaum gained additional training in Minimally Invasive Surgery in the field of Bariatric/Metabolic surgery at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University in New York City. As a fellow, he worked to advance the field of Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) and was one of the first training surgeons to perform this type of surgery using a flexible endoscope. He also continued surgical research which resulted in multiple publications. Dr. Binenbaum became the first to perform single incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) at Monmouth Medical Center.

Dr. Binenbaum returned to practice surgery as a member of Central Jersey Specialty Surgical Associates (CJSSA) in 2008. He continued the practice of advanced minimally invasive general and bariatric surgery, but further expanded his expertise in the field of revisional bariatric and foregut surgery. In 2020 he co-authored a book, “Revisional Foregut Surgery”. Dr. Binenbaum is a Chief of Bariatric Surgery Program at Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. He continues to be involved in teaching and mentoring surgical residents at Monmouth Medical Center and Community Hospital as Clinical Assistant Professor, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson University Medical School.

Dr. Steven J. Binenbaum is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS).

Gurdeep S. Matharoo, MD, FACS, FASMBS

Dr. Gurdeep Matharoo is a fellowship trained and board-certified general surgery. He has advanced training in minimally invasive surgery utilizing both laparoscopic and robotic technologies. Dr. Matharoo is a native of Northern Virginia and has been treating patients in Monmouth County, New Jersey since 2008. He completed his medical education at the American University of the Caribbean in St. Maarten. He continued in a general surgery residency at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, New Jersey. Dr. Matharoo continued to receive additional training in minimally invasive surgery at Staten Island University Hospital in New York. During training Dr. Matharoo received multiple awards from teaching faculty, highest in-training exam scores and a Resident Achievement Award from the Society of Laparo-endoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Matharoo has a strong dedication to instructing medical students and residents. He has been the surgical clerkship director at Monmouth Medical Center for Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Drexel University School of Medicine. Dr. Matharoo is also the Associate Program Director of the general surgery residency program. He is continually involved in education and performance improvement in hospital-wide initiatives. Dr. Matharoo is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Dr. Matharoo has authored multiple surgical research papers that have been published into prestigious medical journals and presented at local and national meetings. Dr. Matharoo served as an author and an editor for a first-of-its-kind textbook on revisional foregut surgery. He is a consultant for outside hospitals when they are searching for performance improvement.

Dr. Matharoo is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is a council member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.

His clinical interests lie in gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, hernia surgery, splenic, and adrenal surgery. Dr. Matharoo is always accepting new patients.

Paul A. Kolarsick, MD, DABS

Paul A.J. Kolarsick, MD, FACS is a double-board certified colorectal and general surgeon.  He completed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University prior to earning his medical degree at New Jersey Medical School, UMDNJ.  Dr. Kolarsick completed general surgical residency training at Monmouth Medical Center and went on to colorectal surgery fellowship training at Cleveland Clinic Florida. 
 
Dr. Kolarsick’s clinical interests include using minimally invasive surgical techniques (such robotic and laparoscopic surgery), and enhanced recovery protocols to improve patient outcomes.  He is dedicated to providing his patients with advanced surgical treatment while focusing on compassionate, quality care.
